Jemaine Clement Gives Promising ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Sequel Update
Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement have toyed with the idea of making a sequel film to mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows for years with no forward movement, but that may soon be changing, according to Clement.
Speaking with Collider at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Clement not only reaffirmed the intention to make a We’re Wolves film, but also that he and Waititi have finally started the writing process.
“We’re writing it, actually. We started writing. For a long time, we were just talking about it. Now, we’ve started it. Very recently,” Clement told the outlet. Though, don’t expect it to be a swift process with their busy schedules.
When does Clement estimate the script will be completed? “At the pace we’re going, 2027, for sure. It helps to be in the same country, for Taika and I to be in the same country,” said the filmmaker.
Waititi has previously joked that “We’re Wolves is the film that Jemaine and I keep pretending that we’re making. Every couple of years we say, we’re making this new film called We’re Wolves, which follows the werewolves from the film.“
The 2014 film What We Do in the Shadows chronicles the lives of four vampire roommates, detailing their nightly routine as they bicker over household chores, cruise for victims, antagonize the local werewolf pack, struggle with modern technology, and more. It introduced a rival pack of werewolves led by Anton (Rhys Darby), the inspiration for the sequel.
While the long-gestating sequel set around the wolf pack is still in the early stage of development, the 2014 film has inspired two spinoff shows in the form of “Wellington Paranormal” and, well, FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows.”
