The one and only big-fisted Goon returns to the world in “The Goon: Occasion of Revenge” #1 (aka The Goon #46) this week! Not only is this fan-favorite back to bash some skulls, readers are guaranteed some more regular doses this time around. This is part 1 of 4 which looks to propel past storylines into the present and beyond.

Curses, spurned lovers, ghosts, guns and dames aplenty are to be found herein from creator Eric Powell. More ghoulish men gather to take out The Goon and take over his bad luck town. Subplots begin this issue out as we learn about how one woman named Sandy survives from man to man without remorse. Scary looking priests also gather with bad intent. Finally, it looks like our scarred faced big lug is getting back into some action!
Powell’s artwork looks changed up for this storyline, resulting in a noir feel with muted colors throughout the tale. There is more a sketched look to the world of The Goon this time around. The ice queen / ghostly ex-lover storyline is a quite noticeable change from the typical monsters, boozing and fists flying readers know and love. Whenever color and all those other goodies do pop up, they’re very effective in establishing importance to the moments. Maybe revenge is a dirty business and that’s why there’s a lack of colors. It definitely sets a mood for readers.
The bad guys look nice and menacing. Each looks equally unique and creepy with their sinister pets hanging off of them so I hope some of them last longer than one confrontation with The Goon. In any case, this looks to be another grand shindig for Freddy, Mudd, The Zombie Priest and everyone else to bash some monstrosities. It’s also new-reader friendly so you can hop right into this story and not worry about catching up until you good and ready. Enjoy some Goon and tell your friends.
