Marvel Studios Begin Production on “Ant Man”!
Well it’s official. After many stops and starts that included one of the longest development processes for one of their films, the House of Ideas has finally put Ant Man in front of the camera. Marvel sent out a full press release today marking the beginning of principal photography in San Francisco and as I sit here I’m not entirely sure how to feel. This time last year we were almost certain Guardians of the Galaxy couldn’t possibly keep the magic alive for Marvel Studios.
But Ant Man still feels a little tenuous. I’m really not sure how I feel about Payton Reed in the director’s seat, especially after one of the most visually gifted and dynamic directors in modern cinema, Edgar Wright walked off the project thanks to differences with the script. Yet, we have some stunning casting in Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym so I’m definitely hooked into the project, and let’s all be honest we’ll be seeing this bad boy post Avengers: Age of Ultron.
I’m just not sure if it’ll make the boatloads of cash, previous Marvel Studios efforts have. I guess we’ll find out next July.
For now the official plot synopsis that Marvel sent out today seems quite tantalizing:

Based on the Marvel comic character first published in 1962, Marvel’s “Ant-Man” continues the lineage of epic big-screen adventures chronicled in Marvel’s “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and the upcoming Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
Oops I lied, still a bunch of stuff we already knew. In any event, I eagerly await those first set photos, and a little more information about how Yellojacket (Corey Stoll) fits into all this.
The supernatural world of Korean folk horror movie Exhuma grows larger with the arrival of prequel spinoff webtoon Maengjong this weekend, Variety reports today.
Naver Webtoon debuts Maengjong on May 30.
The series hails from Haemuri (Olgami) and will trace the high school origins of how shaman duo Hwarim and Bonggil, played by Kim Go-eun and Lee Do-hyun in the 2024 film, came together to face occultish threats.
The story is set to begin when “Hwarim, who has been concealing her identity following a childhood encounter with a snake spirit called Jin, crosses paths with Bonggil at their school.”
Variety notes that Exhuma director Jang Jae-hyun participated in the project’s early concept stage.
“We are presenting ‘Maengjong,’ a new series capturing the appeal of the horror-occult genre, ahead of the full summer season,” said Lee Jeong-geun, Naver Webtoon’s Korea webtoon content leader. “With the high school story of Hwarim and Bonggil, who left a strong impression in the film ‘Exhuma,’ enhanced by Haemuri’s characteristic tense direction, we expect it will be a welcome work for genre fans.”
“It is meaningful that the spin-off story of ‘Exhuma,’ loved by many audiences, expands by meeting the new grammar of webtoon,” said Lee Hyeon-jeong, managing director of the film business division at Showbox, which distributed the film. “We hope it will be a fresh experience for both film fans and webtoon readers.”
Exhuma was a breakout hit in 2024, becoming the first Korean occult film to surpass 10 million ticket buyers and the country’s highest-grossing film of the year. I wrote in my review that “the intricately woven Exhuma delivers one of the year’s biggest surprises in horror so far.”
The bond between Hwarim and Bonggil was one of the film’s highlights, making this prequel webtoon a must for fans.
