Fartbarf and Amanda Cerny Talk Epic Slasher Video “Homeless In Heathrow” (Exclusive)

Published

on

The synth punk ape-like orderlies known as Fartbarf have released an official music video for their track “Homeless In Heathrow” and it’s a fucking doozy! Directed by Brandon Dermer, the man who brought us Nekrogoblikon‘s “No One Survives” and Major Lazer‘s “Scare Me”, the video stars actress/model Amanda Cerny as a babysitter with rather nefarious intentions.

On top of showing you this awesome video, we’ve scored exclusive interviews with both Fartbarf and Amanda Cerny, both of which you can read below!

“Homeless In Heathrow” comes from Dirty Power, which you can snag via iTunes.

What drew you to work director Brandon Dermer on this video?

Brandon approached us with the idea after a series of random life events forced him to track us down and work with us. Many mutual friends made the connection happen. It was unavoidable. And now as fate may have it, we’re all in love. We had seen his Nekrogoblikon video before, and really dug his approach to bring humor into a style of music where most bands lack it. It made it all more accessible on a larger scale. That was key in us deciding to work with Brandon. The dynamics he brought into the video there were great.

What were your reactions when you saw the video? Did you ever envision your music being the soundtrack to multiple (fictitious) homicides?

Fictitious? Bummer! Well… We love old horror movies. Especially the campy 70s and 80s slashers. It was one of the themes we discussed with Brandon very early on when we first met up with him. It was a common idea that was floating around. Somehow he made our mask look pretty frightening on screen, when in reality, they’re pretty dopey looking. It was cool to see that transformation. Every good horror ‘movie’ needs a good mask. We never went into this thinking we would ever even have a music video, let alone one where a hot babysitter kills a slew of lame dudes. But we were happy to see it happen for sure. We’re also big fans of the ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ franchise, so for us, there’s always a time and a place for a lame, preppy, frat jock to get killed on screen.

You’ve stated in previous interviews that you like playing vintage analog synthesizers because they’re so hard to control and that their, “…limitations, I don’t know…they set us free.” And yet there is something enthralling and addictive in your music. While watching the video, I had that same feeling. Amanda’s methods are rather crude yet her personality shines forth and is very hypnotic. Do you see any parallels there or am I reaching way too far here?

We do like setting limitations in how we work, write, and perform our music. Using old synths that require a lot of care and attention always brings a fun and unpredictable challenge that isn’t there with modern software. And it also brings out a different form of frustration. We’d much prefer having an out of tune oscillator that feels organic as our problem, than to have a buffer under run error because our DAW plug-in is too much for our PCU to handle. When meeting up with Amanda, it was obvious she was the girl for the job. We’re not sure if there were any pre determined parallels there or not, but she was just so willing to do whatever needed to be done to make the video work in the way we all envisioned, it was just great to see her make it come alive on screen. Plus, how the hell does anyone do that laying on the ground on your back and springing up onto your feet move? She’s like a Ninja!

Some of the greatest horror scores have been written with analog synthesizers, including the great works of John Carpenter. Do you take any inspiration from those soundtracks?

Yes! Those soundtracks are always amazing. We used the intro song to Assault on Precinct 13 as our set intro for a while. But beyond that, all of the John Carpenter stuff is just the best. Extremely minimal. Death Waltz Recordings puts a lot of those old gems out on vinyl in limited runs, which is incredible. It’s always fun discovering new ones.

Horror synth is making a big comeback, with names like Perturbator and Lazerhawk releasing some truly stellar albums. Would that be an area that you see yourself delving into at all, especially with such a fantastic slasher video in your repertoire?

We wouldn’t be opposed to doing something like that at all. We started Fartbarf wanting to do something that no one’s really done before using synths. Even with the limitations the old analog gear has, with our first album, we kept all of the sounds in a very tight window. Lot’s of harsh overdriven square and sawtooth waveforms. There wasn’t a lot of dynamic range on those songs synth-wise, which was calculated at the time. But there’s a whole other world to tap into with our synths that we haven’t really shown publicly yet. The majority of us playing around in our studio for hours, sounds more similar to the Horror synth genre than how we sound live in fact. Long drones and sweeping pads, fun with effects pedals, etc. The songs we play live and what we released on ‘Dirty Power’ are just a single side of a 20 sided die. Behind the scenes, we seem to always play a lot more dark, slow and very long extended tracks with little to no changes at all. More of just dissecting parts and building parts up. They’d definitely make for a good feature film slasher. Ahhh… if only it was 1980.

Be honest, what was your reaction when asked to star in a music video where the group’s name is Fartbarf?

The name didn’t seem too glamorous at first and made me a little nauseous thinking of where it could have originated from… But since I am all about exploring different genres and creative concepts I gave it chance. Thank goodness I did! Because the cast, crew, and band were the greatest ever to work with!

Had you seen any of director Brandon Dermer’s videos before this and, if so, what’d you think of them?

Talk about talent! Brandon is the main reason I agreed to come on board for this video. After I saw his Major Lazer music video, I definitely wanted to be a part of one of his amazing creations. If you haven’t seen his ‘Flesh Lightning’ movie trailer already, you are missing out!

Your character is quite the huntress, playing with her victims before killing them. Were there any aspects of your character that you found yourself easily channeling or relating with? Basically, should we be terrified of you?

Hahaha! I could definitely relate to being the sweet girl next door-baby sitter side of my character… But I never knew that psychotic serial killer side of me until after we shot this music video of course. I think I am going to have a extremely difficult time finding a significant other after this video release. BOYS BEWARE!

If you were a serial killer, what would be your calling card?

I would leave a cookie after every kill so the reporters can add some humor and make cookie monster accusations.
