To my surprise Kevin Smith’s Tusk is now available on iTunes (even though it’s $15 as of this writing). Of course, my friends and I rushed to watch it. After the Toronto International Film Festival hype, it had to be as disturbing and funny as the reviews stated, right?
No. In fact, Tusk is easily one of the worst films of the year. Not only is the Human Centipede-inspired horror awfully mean-spirited (it tries to hurt the viewer with no message), but it’s painfully unfunny. I used to be a huge Smith fan, and was even excited for Tusk based on the previews, but I cannot to express my displeasure enough.
The only thing that gives this abomination value is Michael Parks’ performance, which is overshadowed by Johnny Depp’s shocking repugnant appearance as the French-Canadian Guy LaPointe.
And Justin Long, who fights to preserve his acting credibility through the worst dialogue imaginable, is transformed into a rubbery awful effects mess that’s disastrously laughable.
TUSK WAS IN THEATERS. I’m having trouble digesting that, still.
Dare you to watch it.
