“Preacher” Is Going to Pilot at AMC!

Published

on

It’s all happening, all because Jesse Custer TOLD THEM TO DO IT.

With “The Walking Dead” breaking records and its spinoff, “Cobal,” going to pilot, AMC is moving forward with their next comic adaptation.

Variety reports that AMC has given a pilot order to “Preacher,” which has been adapted from the comic book series by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Rogen and Goldberg wrote the adaptation for Neal Moritz’s Original Film. That trio is exec producing through their Point Grey banner, along with showrunner Sam Catlin.

Based on Ennis and Steve Dillon’s ’90s comic book series, “Preacher” is “about Jesse Custer, a preacher in a Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Along with his ex-girlfriend and an Irish vampire, the three embark on a journey to find God…and make him answer for his sins.

The pilot will be produced in the summer of 2015 for series consideration in 2016.

Now, before you get overly excited (too late, I’m exploding), we warned that if AMC passes we may never even see the pilot. Such the case with FOX’s defunct “Locke & Key,” which was allegedly “too scary.” I’d love to see someone else take that on.

“Preacher” is best suited for a series – as opposed to a feature film – as it’s a lengthy arc that needs a few seasons to conclude. There are plenty of great characters – from Cassidy to Arseface to the Saint of Killers – that could easily be their own season arc. The biggest question I have is as to whether or not AMC is afraid to touch religion. “Preacher” is going to piss a lot of people off. Good.

IDW Dark and Paramount recently joined forces to launch limited comic book tales set in the worlds of Smile and A Quiet Place, and we’ve learned today that they’ll continue hanging around in those franchise universes with two brand new limited series tales.

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively revealed this afternoon that IDW Dark’s Any Given Smile debuts in September, while A Quiet Place: Rising Tides arrives in November.

First up, from writer Stephanie Williams and artist Pablo CollarAny Given Smile puts a football-themed twist on Parker Finn’s successful Smile movie franchise.

The five-part limited series is “set in January 1995, during the American Arena League football championship game in St. Augustine, Florida. The rising superstar of the Sharks, backup quarterback Dupree, is feeling the pressure from his teammates, the fans, and also the city’s gambling underworld, to whom he owes a considerable debt. Meanwhile, a sports journalist investigates a string of suicides that may be connected to the big game. At the very least, they are connected to a sinister entity that preys on the minds of its victims.”

From writer Declan Shalvey and artist Luke SparrowA Quiet Place: Rising Tides will also be a five-issue limited story. The comic book tale “brings the creatures to the Florida Keys, where a father-daughter duo attempt to survive on water in a houseboat.”

EW further details, “This tense family reunion coincides with the arrival of the vicious creatures that hunt through sound. Grace and her dad find safety on the open ocean, but she’ll have to make landfall sooner or later; the father’s oxygen tank and their supplies are running low, while a hurricane swiftly approaches.”
