Those hoping to see Michael Keaton return to his Beetlejuice role can be both equally excited and disappointed.

Tim Burton and Keaton both talked “the Ghost with the most” this weekend, only they shared conflicting information.

Burton, out promoting Big Eyes, tells CS:

“It’s a character that I love and I miss and I miss actually working with Michael. There’s only one Betelgeuse. We’re working on a script and I think it’s probably closer than ever and I’d love to work with him again.”

And then, over at Deadline, Keaton says the opposite:

“Tim Burton and I have emailed about it. We’re both in the same situation (of always being busy on other projects). Neither one of us gets tired of the conversation… Tim says he’s working on something, then goes away for a while. At some point, someone is going to say we really want to do it. You don’t want to fuck it up, so it has to be perfect.”

The one constant is that both Burton and Keaton desire to team up for the Warner Bros. produced sequel that’s been penned by Seth Grahame Smith. The good news to come from this is that Burton would be more in the know than Keaton, who is waiting on Burton to announce as his next project. If Burton thinks they’re closer than ever, this means they truly are closer than ever.
