Bloody-Disgusting has teamed up with Philadelphia-based emcee J.O. The Last Man to bring you the exclusive music video premiere for “The Bleeding Diamond”, which comes from this year’s The Mushroom Chronicles VI.
Created by Reel Wolf Productions, the video follows a diamond ring and the havoc and bloodshed that it seems to bring to all those who come into contact with it. We see heartbreak, murder, and people sinking to depths that no person should ever have to touch.
You can watch the video premiere below as well as read an interview with J.O.
Make sure to pick up your copy of The Mushroom Chronicles VI via iTunes.
Tell us about the song and the inspiration behind “The Bleeding Diamond”?
Master Sihn (The Producer) came to me with this super dark beat so I knew from the door something on the evil side was going to come out. Then he added the voice sample from early 90s Philly artist Bad Newz — “Lucifer in the flesh, dressed in all white, six crosses, dangle from my herring-bone chain.” (Keep in mind that I ate copious amounts of Mushrooms for the entire writing process of this album.) So I’m writing, entering the dark-side of things, I hear Lucifer, I hear herring-bone chain, I’m thinking jewelry, greed, violence, and next thing you know I’m transformed into a diamond and writing this story about my journey. Stories aren’t easy to write, then add the fact that almost every line has this double meaning thing going on, and you have the makings of something super abstract, but super dope, and even a little bit relatable.
The video is this crazy mini horror movie. Tell us about the video and the concept?
I think once the track was done, the vision for the video was there. I knew not everyone was going to get the song on the first listen; maybe even the 10th listen, so adding the visual medium was the only way to actually finish the piece. Obviously, as an artist under an indy label (Shout-Out to Sensi Starr), we couldn’t do some of the scenes. The money just wasn’t there. But we took what we knew we could accomplish, and applied it. I think it came out crazy. Its linear, but it comes around full circle just like any real cycle. And yes, Lucifer is horrific haha.
What was it like working with Reel Wolf Productions and what did they bring to the table?
Those Reel Wolf guys are crazy talented. They were the first crew I thought of the second I decided to do a visual. They’re doing things that other people in our circuit only dream of. They’re literally the guys to beat. They’re crazy professional too. Tom is a super animated dude lol, and when I came to him with a concept like this, he flipped out. They were ready to do something outside of the box and the fit was perfect. We sat down for a few hours, bounced around a few ideas, and a few days later Tom presented 3 different storyboards, with 3 different budgets. I weighed my options and we went for it. They work fast too. It can’t be easy to hire all those actors, find all those scenes, get all those shots, edit, color correct; like where does it stop? I couldn’t have done even close to what I wanted to do without them.
Your music is hip-hop, it’s got rock influences and bridges the gap between all genres. What can people expect when they pick up your album “The Mushroom Chronicles Part VI”?
Mushies is an incredible album if you ask me lol. There are a lot of conceptual tracks, all spawned by the fact that I was out of my mind the entire time. Scott Stallone and Pete Humphreys made it sound incredible, and all of the beats and featured artists are really solid. At Sensi Starr, we have a crazy high standard for quality. Every artist puts the actual art first. If we’re not making you think; making you smarter, what are we doing it for? The album isn’t full of punchlines, but it paints amazing pictures with super complicated multis and poetic double meanings. A lot of thought went into every aspect. You can expect a pretty trip ride from front to back.
