Update, 9:19pm EST: According to Deadline, Showtime has released the following statement, which offers some hope in this situation:
We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. SHOWTIME also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm.
Director David Lynch has confirmed through a series of tweets that he will not be working on the 3rd season of the cult classic murder mystery series Twin Peaks. He writes that this is due to an inability between Showtime and himself to reach a budget, “…to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done.”
Word was spreading that the 3rd season was cancelled but that appears to not be the case. This is still very disheartening and sad news as Lynch’s style is what made the original two seasons so enchanting and charming.
We’ll be keeping an eye on the situation and reporting as more is learned.
