Lars von Trier’s ‘The House That Jack Built’ Will Be “Without Precedent”

Published

on

Auteur Lars von Trier is incredibly self aware, which I think makes him the genius filmmaker that he is. Self-proclaimed the greatest director ever, he’s never sold out and made a movie for Hollywood. He’s lived in his own comfortable world, and made the kind of films that he enjoys making. Now, after his lengthy Nymphomaniac, he’s beginning to question his ability as a filmmaker, and could retire. But don’t panic just yet, before that happens he’ll (hopefully) deliver the previously announced television series “The House That Jack Built”.

The filmmaker’s producer, Louise Vesth, had previously revealed “The House That Jack Built”, which producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen adds that the show will be “without precedent” and warned that “you better hold your breath.”

“Now, when he’s not able to speak, so he cannot say that it’s not true, I’m happy to announce that the next Lars von Trier project will be a TV series in the English language,” Vesth said. “He has a really really good idea which I cannot tell more about right now. He wants a huge cast and from what I heard, I’m sure that it will be something that you have never seen before and you will definitely never see again.”

While filming was set to begin in 2016, it appears Von Trier has been going through self-doubt and rehab for his alcohol addition. Could clarity change the future for his brilliant director?

Cineuropa reports from the University of Copenhagen – where he studied, before entering the National Film School of Denmark – where he was interviewed by associate professor in film and media science Peter Schepelern.

He is still attending AA sessions, but he is no longer on the wagon. “I drink moderately – probably not moderately enough,” he said, according to Danish music-film-fashion magazine Soundvenue.

Other remarks made by the director include:

“I promised my wife I wouldn’t say anything bad about Muslims (not implying that I have anything bad to say.)”

“I think man is good, but very confused.”

“I am the man who has made the most trilogies of only two films – The Kingdom 1 + 2, and Dogville + Manderlay.”

“For the moment I feel really shitty. I cry and cry… yes, a sensitive man.”

“I am very attentive to the possibility of becoming too old to make films – and when it happens.”

“I am really very pleased about having been here. I say this from an honest heart.”

Von Trier disclosed that he is in fact still writing “The House That Jack Built”, an eight-part English-language television series about a serial killer, as seen from the murderer’s point of view. Hopefully his newfound clarity won’t affect his work.

George A. Romero Foundation Founder Suzanne Desrocher-Romero Has Passed Away

Suzanne Desroches-Romero and George A. Romero

All of us here at Bloody Disgusting are deeply saddened to learn that George A. Romero Foundation Founder and President Suzanne Desrocher-Romero has passed away.

GARF shared in a statement on socials, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Suzanne Desrocher Romero. Suzanne passed away of natural causes on June 24 at her home in Toronto after a prolonged illness.”

The statement continues, “Suzanne was the fierce leader of the George A. Romero Estate and The George A. Romero Foundation. She worked tirelessly to preserve George’s legacy. Her work at the foundation will continue to inspire and live on for generations to come. The family asks for privacy at this time.”

Desrocher-Romero founded GARF in 2018, after her late husband’s passing in 2017, and has been a fierce advocate for his legacy and the arts. It was her mission to “strengthen horror as a serious field of global study,” and she was a tremendous fighter on behalf of Romero’s works and supporting new filmmakers inspired by his legacy.

It was Desrocher-Romero who spearheaded the recovery and restoration of The Amusement Park, and, as the person in charge of the George A. Romero estate, worked closely with author Daniel Kraus on completing unfinished novels like Pay the Piper and The Living Dead. She most recently celebrated the restoration of her favorite of Romero’s zombie films, Day of the Dead, and was hard at work producing the upcoming film Twilight of the Dead.

That passionate advocacy led to Suzanne Desrocher-Romero becoming family to Bloody Disgusting as well.

2023 marked the start of an ongoing partnership between Bloody FM and GARF on The Dead, a scripted audio series spanning multiple seasons that saw Desrocher-Romero working closely with the Bloody FM team and mentoring the series’s contributing writers with GARF. To say her loss will be felt internally is an understatement.

“Anytime George Romero is mentioned is good, because what we are doing is to provide a healthy legacy. We’re uplifting his legacy, we’re supporting the archive, and we’re also supporting the Horror Study Center. So, all of these three things are what the Foundation is striving to do. As far as I’m concerned, the more we say George Romero’s name, the better it is,” Desrocher-Romero recently told BD.

It’s the perfect encapsulation of her unwavering enthusiasm for supporting Romero’s legacy and the horror genre, and just a glimpse at how much she contributed to preserving it. She is, in short, an inspiration.

We send our deepest condolences to Suzanne Desrocher-Romero’s family, friends, and GARF.
