One of the more polarizing things about The Evil Within was the forced “cinematic letterbox” that offered a wider field of view but limited how much could be seen above and below the screen. This made climbing ladders a wee bit more challenging, as we were previously unable to see what might be waiting for us at the top. It took some getting used to, and even then, it always felt awkward. Thankfully, it is now optional.
In a new update released earlier this week, Bethesda confirmed the letterbox can now be switched off in favor of a more familiar, full screen format. The update also introduced some small tweaks to make playing the game on casual difficulty somewhat easier.
