“American Horror Story: Hotel” Inspired By Elise Lam’s Bizarre True Story

Published

It’s “American Horror Story” day, apparently, as we shared fresh casting, and news of “American Horror Story: Hotel’s” October 7th premiere date.

We had previously guessed three theories about the plot for “American Horror Story: Hotel”, which included H.H. Holmes, Theory: The Garden of Allah! and the more recent Cecil Hotel Theory.

It looks as if we nailed one right on the nose!

Co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, along with the cast, offered up details Friday at FX’s Television Critics Assn. press tour, and Variety shares the scoop.

Murphy said that the “Hotel” idea was inspired by a surveillance video from a Los Angeles-based hotel that surfaced two years ago. The footage showed a girl – Elise Lam – in an elevator who ended up dead.

“It is called ‘Hotel’ and it’s set in a hotel,” Murphy said, disclosing that the hotel will be set in downtown L.A. “We deal with a lot of American horrors, [including] addiction.”

Lady Gaga will play the owner of the haunted hotel.

“AHS” vet Sarah Paulson will play an addict who she describes as “quite dark,” “vile” and “nasty.”

“I think she’s sexy. She’s a drug addict — not that drug addicts are sexy, but this girl happened to be quite sexy,” Paulson added. “She’s unlike anything I’ve done on the show. Really, unlike anything I’ve done anywhere.”

The full cast includes: Lady Gaga, Matt Bomer, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Finn Wittrock, Chloe Sevigny, Wes Bentley, and Cheyenne Jackson.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
