When it comes to music, clearly there’s more than one Holy Grail. Depending on what you’re looking for, there’s a plethora of surprises to found when scouring people’s vast collection of YouTube videos.
My wife has recently become obsessed with Megadeth (make me proud, girl), and has been binging on all content associated with the band and its emperor, Dave Mustaine. Anytime I walk into the room she’s watching some random Megadeth interview, show, or music video.
This past weekend I walked in on something spectacular. At first I joked that Megadeth was in a sequel to V/H/S before becoming enthralled in what I was witnessing. More on this in a second.
Megadeth’s Rust in Peace is a seminal album in metal history. While its followup, Countdown to Extinction, is the band’s most popular and successful album, Rust in Peace is lightning in a bottle, an electric experience that raises hairs the moment the first note blasts through speakers.
I was only 10 when Rust in Peace came out, thus I missed out on the thrash legends’ early years. Sure, I got to see Pantera, White Zombie and other great 90’s bands in their prime, but never was able to experience bands like Megadeth during their heyday.
Being a hardcore Megadeth fan myself – sorry Metallica, you’re second fiddle – I consider the following the Holy Grail of metal footage. There’s tons of great stuff out there – from Pantera’s own “Vulgar Video” to incredible bootlegs of Alice in Chains shows, and even Metallica’s “Binge and Purge” box set – but none as spectacular as what you’re about to see.
Next month marks the 25th anniversary of the masterpiece of metal known as Rust in Peace. With that, I’m so excited to share this YouTube find that takes us back to November 8, 1990, two months after the release of the album.
This video from the vault was filmed by a crew member in Los Angeles, CA, and takes us on a full blown tour of the show, in which Megadeth was to open for Judas Priest.
What makes this so goddamn special is that we get a peek inside the dressing room as the band gears up for their performance. Following is a tour of the entire venue, including the merchandise booth(!), as well as the live show (from various locations on the floor) and fun on the band’s tour bus.
Outside of getting the feel for a metal show in 1990, the highlight is seeing Dave Mustaine bitch out the cameraman before raving about a “buff” motorcycle book given to him by Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford.
