Del Toro: “There Is Hope For ‘Silent Hills'”

Published

on

Update 9/17/15: Guillermo del Toro has created an official Twitter account, which negates this story.

The emotional rollercoaster that is the Silent Hills saga is beginning to spin wildly out of control. First the P.T. demo is released and people figuratively – and in some cases literally – shit their pants over how cool it is. Then it becomes crystal clear that it’s essentially a long teaser for a new Silent Hill entry. Only for this game they’ve got Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, and Norman Reedus attached, which basically blew up the gaming world. Then it all came crashing down when Kojima and Konami went their separate ways and the title was officially cancelled. Or was it?

Tweeting about a fan petition that is nearly 200,000 signatures, del Toro issued an interesting statement about the game, saying “…Hay esperanzas para #SilentHills“, which translates to “There is hope for #SilentHills“.

Now, it should absolutely be noted that this is NOT a verified Twitter account and that there are some suspicious aspects surrounding this page. For example, the Twitter bio leads to a fan website. Additionally, some tweets are simply past quotes from del Toro. However, it’s nice to have that little bit of hope.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
