The remake/reboot of James O’Barr’s dark comic The Crow has gone through a lot of troubles since its announcement but this one could be a game changer.
Due to the recent announcement that Relativity Media is filing for bankruptcy, The Crow producer Edward J. Pressman is filing an objection to the film being included in the studio’s assets as it gets ready for a major sale, according to The Wrap. Relativity has invested millions into this film under the promise that it would begin principal photography within three years, half of which has already elapsed. The rights to acquire the project, along with sequels and prequels, apparently cost $2.5 million alone.
Pressman is concerned that whomever purchases these rights will not have the resources to release the film to a minimum of 1,000 screens in the U.S., which would require, “…no less than $10 million to $12 million.”
Because of all of this, director Corin Hardy (The Hallow) might abandon the project, which Pressman states, “…is widely regarded as a key creative element. Thus, the production of the picture is imploding even as the time to make the picture is running out under the Crow contract.”
As previously stated, Pressman does not want the film to go to any random studio. He wants to ensure that a new owner would be able to fulfill the contractual requirements by financing and releasing the film in theaters.
