Now, before you grab your pitchforks and torches, understand that this version of Stephen King’s Misery is actually a New York broadway performance. Starring Bruce Willis as novelist Paul Sheldon and Laurie Metcalf as Annie Wilkes, the broadway production, which opens November 15th, is directed by Will Frears.
King’s story follows a novelist who is involved in a car accident. Upon waking upon, he finds himself being held hostage by his, “number one fan“, a woman who is completely out of touch with reality. The longer Sheldon remains in the care of Wilkes, the more he realizes that his life is in horrible danger and that he must escape at any cost.
Frears knows that a large portion of the audience is coming because of one of the most iconic and memorable scenes from the novel and original film, which starred James Caan and Kathy Bates: the sledgehammer to the ankles. “You can feel their excitement, that they spent the whole show waiting for it to come,” Frears tells EW. As for what actually happens on stage? Well, you’ll just have to see!
