There’s some fresh news from Camp Crystal Lake as Aaron Guzikowski will be penning Friday the 13th for Paramount Pictures and Platinum Dunes.
Guzikowski is the writer behind Prisoners, which was one of the hottest screenplays in Hollywood. He is also penning the remake of Universal’s The Wolf Man.
There’s still no update on the fate of David Bruckner is no longer attached. He had been tapped to direct from a screenplay by Nick Antosca that would have taken viewers back to the 1980’s when Jason Voorhees was terrorizing campers. There are no plot details yet, but we’re told that the fresh Paramount execs want a modern take.
TheWrap received the same response to our inquiries: Producers felt it wasn’t fair to ask Bruckner to wait around while they develop another draft. While they’d love to have Bruckner direct the next installment in the horror franchise and plan to go back to him when they have a new script, he is not officially involved with the project at this time.
Paramount recently shifted the release date to January 13, 2017 in order to allow more time for development, being that they’re starting from scratch.
This will mark the 13th film in the franchise, with the most recent bowing in 2009 for New Line and Warner Bros. As part of the deal that allowed Warner Bros. to come on as co-producers on Interstellar, the studio traded the rights to Friday the 13th to Paramount, which is where Platinum Dunes also holds a first-look deal, as explained by Variety.
This will be the second Friday the 13th installment Platinum Dunes will produce, already having rebooted classic slashers The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
