A new featurette from the season 3 Blu-ray/DVD release of “Hannibal“, which incidentally came out today, goes into the final scene between FBI Special Agent Will Graham and renowned serial killer Hannibal Lecter and the near erotic moment shared between them as both are drenched in blood. On a personal note, the loss of this show still stings. We received three glorious seasons of absolute beauty and majesty, so I’m not ungrateful. However, knowing that there were plans to go down the Silence of the Lambs route and wondering what more beauty the team could come up with leaves a hole in me that can’t be filled.
If you haven’t watched the series, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s got enough blood and viscera for the gorehounds but, and far more importantly, it’s a wickedly smart show, one that focuses on the characters and their own growth and revelations. It’s also one of the most beautiful programs I’ve ever witnessed. Every scene is a piece of art, constructed with lighting, color, sound, texture, and music to form a painting that unearths something new with each viewing.
“Hannibal” was horror in its most wondrous form and I can only hope that one day we shall see Dr. Lecter dine again.
