In ‘Depth’, When You Mess With the Bull (Shark), You Get Eaten

Published

on

In the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game Depth, a party of people-shaped pastries must take on a shiver of sharks. That’s right, a shiver — as in the sensation that will travel the length of your easily broken spine when you realize you’ve declared war on a perfectly evolved hunter that’s ruled the ocean for a long ass time.

Depth has been slowly evolving — kind of like a certain sea-dwelling killing machine — since its arrival on Steam Early Access last November. Developer Digital Confectioners has done an impressive job in diversifying the game’s selection of ginormous murder fish, which now stars the Great White, Tiger, Mako, Hammerhead, Thresher and Bull shark. That last one was introduced this week. Let’s take a minute to get to know him.

Digital Confectioners describes the Bull shark as “a medium threat with an anger problem, making it an aggressive and unpredictable foe. Though it lacks immediate force, the Bull’s true strength lies in its ability to Enrage, temporarily becoming one of the strongest beasts in the sea.” Tweak that last bit and that would also apply to at least two of my uncles.

There’s more than 400 types of sharks in the world, and that’s just the types we know about. I’m sure there’s at least one remaining Megalodon left in some miles-deep ocean crevice, eating stray Krakens and waiting for the chance to taste its next human.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
