A handful of new video game ratings posted on the ESRB website may have leaked the next batch of PS2 games that will be getting emulation support. In November, Sony re-released several PS2 games on the PS4 after Microsoft made 104 Xbox 360 games backwards compatible on the Xbox One. The difference is in how each company is going about bringing these older titles to their respective platforms.
Microsoft’s answer to the backwards compatibility problem seems like the best option, since every game that gets updated can be played for free so long as you haven’t gotten rid of your own physical copy. They’re the exact same game, they’ve just been made playable on a new platform.
Sony has taken a different approach with their solution by charging for the PS2 emulated titles, which have been updated to support trophies, live-streaming and remote play, in addition to the crisper visuals provided by their being upscaled to full 1080p HD.
There are pros and cons with each platform’s answer to the backwards compatibility problem, it’s really just a matter of personal preference.
The ESRB ratings that were spotted by Gematsu have a clear standout among them, and that would be the nightmarish survival horror game Siren. This series has always been underrated, so it’s nice to see it getting some love. It will be joined by Wild Arms 3, Primal, Okage: Shadow King, and Ape Escape 3.
