‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ Gains Some Blocky Writers

Published

on

The writing duo of Dan & Kevin Hageman, who worked on the script for The Lego Movie, have signed on to work on the script for Guillermo del Toro’s live-action adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, according to THR. The movie will be bringing the trilogy of spooky tales written by Alvin Schwartz to the big screen. It’s not certain how Stephen Gammell’s illustrations will be factored in, although del Toro has asserted that they’re going to find a way.

The writers and del Toro have worked together on the Netflix animated series Trollhunters.

The trilogy of books, with the three volumes being released in 1981, 1984, and 1991 respectively, were the cause of much controversy, including being banned from schools for their graphic imagery. As someone who grew up with those books (and still has the treasury on my shelf), I can tell you that the illustrations were absolutely the scariest part of the book as the stories were rather tame.

Still, these books and the stories and pictures contained within were a huge part of my childhood and I’m certain were a big part of many of yours as well! I’m extremely excited to see what will come of this as I think del Toro has the perfect imagination and vision to bring such a concept to life!
