Remember Me developer Dontnod gave us our first look at their next project, Vampyr, back in December. Set in 1918 London that’s been decimated by the Spanish Flu and hungry vampires, the dark fantasy RPG follows Jonathan E. Reid, a military surgeon-turned-vampire who feeds on the diseased populous to survive.
“Absolutely all characters in the game are potential victims of your vampiric lust,” says Dontnod. “Carefully study the habits of your next victim, his or her relationships with other characters, and set up your strategy to feed, unnoticed: seduce them, change their daily habits, or make sure they end up alone in a dark street.
Weapon crafting will be a big part of the combat in Vampyr, which combines elements of close and long-range combat, along with Reid’s supernatural abilities that can be improved by feeding on humans. However, it’s important to be picky with your prey, as killing certain individuals can have a noticeable impact on the world.
“We want to go back to the Gothic roots of Vampire mythology and emphasize their struggling duality: killing innocent people to survive is the price of immortality,” Dontnod previously explained in an interview with Gamespot. “So if you, as a player, were a vampire, how would you handle that choice? Less glitter, more grit.”
The Unreal Engine 4 powered horror game is headed to PC, PS4 and Xbox One in 2017.
