Neve Campbell Glad Her ‘Scream’ Days Are Over

Published

on

It wasn’t until Wes Craven’s 1994 Scream that Neve Campbell became a household name. Before taking on a major role in “Party of Five,” Campbell survived Ghost Face in one of the biggest slasher films of all time, which went on to spawn three sequels and a television series now airing on MTV.

It was the highlight of her career, one that created a launching pad for her successful career.

Next up, she’ll be seen in the fourth season of Netflix’s “House of Cards,” which is why she took the time to sit down and speak to The Guardian.

“I’m so glad those days are over,” she says. “I felt I was being forced into being something I wasn’t – all the time.” The comedy slasher franchise dominated her career until the last money-spinning fourth instalment in 2011. Still, the 42-year-old realises that those roles paid for her current lifestyle, for her home in Brooklyn with her British-American actor partner JJ Feild and their three-year-old son, Caspian. “I’ve been very sensible with the money I made,” she says, “and I did make good money.”

A Bloody reader tipped us off to the article because he felt Campbell was dissing the Scream franchise that was so good to her career. This may be true, but I feel like she’s reflecting back on the notion that she needed to pay her dues in order to do the kind of acting that fills her with joy. And that’s fine. From Jamie Lee Curtis to Johnny Depp, many young actors get their start in our genre before moving on to big budget blockbusters. I think it would be insulting if she were to literally shit on Wes Craven’s Scream, but I think it’s nice that she’s being so open and honest about her Hollywood career, albeit there’s not a whole lot of information here.

Scream is one of the most important genre films ever; I’m sure Campbell wouldn’t change anything that led her to where she is now – starring in “House of Cards” beginning March 4th on Netflix.
