PlayStation VR Arrives in October for $399

Published

I desperately want virtual reality to work so I can play games like Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Allison Road, the Chernobyl VR Project and whatever Paranormal Activity VR is, only I’m not at all willing to drop $600 for the Oculus Rift, or $800 for Valve’s HTC Vive — mostly because even my high-end gaming laptop wouldn’t be able to do anything with them.

The high price of admission is a legitimate concern for most folks, including myself, but also for the early adopters, who I suspect wouldn’t want to invest in their money in tech that’ll go the way of 3D televisions. I saw a grim future for virtual reality, then Sony shed some light on PlayStation VR.

Sony’s gotten good at these mic drop announcements. My children’s children won’t remember this with the same level of excitement that they’ll struggle to repress when they recall the tale of Sony’s unforgettable E3 2013 presser — in which the company delivered a TKO to Microsoft and effectively “won” this console cycle before it even began — but it’s another good one.

PlayStation VR has been priced at a relatively low $399. That’s the very minimum dollar amount I’ve seen in most projections, the majority of which expected it to fall somewhere between $499-549.

This by itself wouldn’t be enough for me to say Sony’s headset is going to conquer the VR space in the same way the PS4 has with console gaming, even if it’s rapidly approaching 40 million in worldwide sales. I don’t know how many $2,000+ gaming PC’s that are out in the world, but it’s probably less than that.

This article’s beginning to sound like a native ad for PlayStation VR, so I’m going to leave the rest of the conversation to you. Which VR headset, if any, are you the most interested in?

While you wait for Alien: Romulus, the folks over at Devilworks have cooked up their own slice of “mockbuster” fun with Alien Hunt, and we’re debuting the trailer here on BD this morning.

This brand-new sci-fi horror from director Aaron Mirtes (The Bigfoot Trap, Painted in Blood) is set for its US premiere on May 14, and you can find it on digital thanks to Devilworks.

You can exclusively watch the official trailer for Alien Hunt below, which looks to combine elements of Alien and Predator. This particular “mockbuster” has very little interest in hiding its inspirations, with the alien designs plucked straight out of H.R. Giger’s beautiful brain. Hey, if you’re going to pull from other movies, might as well take from the all-time greats!

In Alien Hunt, “On a hunting trip in the wilderness, a group of siblings discovers an abandoned military outpost on their land, but is it what it seems?

“Their trip takes a sinister turn when they find themselves facing off against a relentless army of extra-terrestrial beings. Suddenly, the hunters become the hunted.

“The formidable squad of alien soldiers will stop at nothing to wipe out the enemy and in an all-out, brutal battle for survival, it’s kill or be killed in Alien Hunt.”

Barron Boedecker (Escape Pod, The Bigfoot Trap), Brent Bentley (The Perfect In-Laws, Haunt Season), Deiondre Teagle (The Visitor, Painted in Blood, Death Ranch), Chelsey Fuller (The Bigfoot Trap, The Silent Natural), Jesse Santoyo (A Nashville Country Christmas, Potter’s Ground), and Adam Pietripaoli (The Bigfoot Trap, The OctoGames) star.
