‘The Neon Demon’ Dazzles UK Audiences This July
Bloody Disgusting can confirm that, following its Cannes premiere, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Neon Demon will open in UK cinemas on July 8th, 2016.
In addition, we have a handful of new images from the pic that stars Elle Fanning as ‘Jesse,’ an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles in hopes of breaking through. Her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, Drive, Only God Forgives) with a screenplay co-written by NWR and Mary Laws, the film’s principal cast includes Elle Fanning (Maleficent), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1), Karl Glusman (Stonewall), Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road), Desmond Harrington (Dexter, Gossip Girl) Christina Hendricks (Drive), and Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix series).
Alessandro Nivola plays Nicolas, a fashion impresario who taps Elle Fanning as his muse.
Composer Cliff Martinez recently stated that the film vibes with Mark Robson’s Valley of The Dolls and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, with the music of Drive.
“I think Neon Demon had some similarities to Drive,” he says to Vice’s Thump, adding “it’s kind of a sparse electronic score.” Noting that the score “is almost all synthesizer,” he adds, “there’s a lot of places where the music is really pushed out more into the spotlight, even more than Drive. I think I got a bigger part in the film, it’s flattering.”
He continues: “We describe the first half as a melodrama like Valley of the Dolls, and the second half is like ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’. It doesn’t seem to be a traditional horror film to me, but horror is the genre that it’s closest to.”
Amazon Studios will release the film in theaters this coming summer.

One of the genre films we’re looking forward to checking out at SXSW this year is Dead Mail, written and directed by Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy and premiering on March 9.

“On a desolate, Midwestern county road, a bound man crawls towards a remote postal box, managing to slide a blood-stained plea-for-help message into the slot before a panicking figure closes in behind him. The note makes its way to the county post office and onto the desk of Jasper, a seasoned and skilled “dead letter” investigator, responsible for investigating lost mail and returning it to its sender. As he investigates further, Jasper meets Trent, a strange yet unassuming man who has taken up residence at the men’s home where Jasper lives.
“When Trent unexpectedly shows up at Jasper’s office, it becomes clear he has a vested interest in the note, and will stop at nothing to retrieve it…”
