‘Dead by Daylight’ is Doing Cool Things With Character Progression
The makers of next month’s asymmetrical multiplayer slasher game Dead by Daylight are back and they’ve brought a new developer diary — the fourth in an ongoing series — that explains how the game’s nifty character progression system works.
Everything you do in Dead by Daylight awards Blood Points, which are a currency that can be invested in a skill tree called the Blood Web to unlock new abilities, items, perks and add-ons. The Blood Web is procedurally generated so while you won’t know exactly what you’re going to get, its contents will fall into one of four categories, depending on who you’re playing as.
Survivors can choose to focus on objectives, survival, altruism or boldness, and the killer can choose from hunter, brutality, sacrifice and deviousness. Also interesting is the “malevolent presence” that attempts to “eat” the Blood Web’s contents so they’re no longer available to unlock using your Blood Points.
Perks are essentially your main abilities, and each character has a unique perk that can be mastered and even taught to other players. Add-ons can be used to augment items or provide a boost to the killer’s power. Items and add-ons are lost when your character dies. The final, and coolest, consumable is the offering. Offerings can be used at the start of each match to mix things up by changing the lighting, covering the map in fog, altering its layout, or even adjusting the rules.
If you need to brag, you can do so through your online ranking. This is improved by completing matches, and by performing well. So don’t rage quit or suck at the game and you’ll be fine.
The next developer diary will focus on the upcoming beta, so stay tuned!
Dead by Daylight releases June 21 for PC.

‘A Man in the Woods With an Axe’ – First Look at ’80s Throwback Slasher [Exclusive]
We have an exclusive first look at A Man in the Woods With an Axe, a blood-soaked, genre-twisting homage to 1980s slasher films.
Spanning four decades, A Man in the Woods With an Axe begins in the summer of 1987 before pushing into the modern era, weaving together timelines and perspectives in a way that builds both dread and intrigue.
Drawing inspiration from genre standouts like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Hatchet, and The Cabin in the Woods, the film blends visceral horror with moments of dark humor, creating a uniquely balanced experience that honors tradition while carving its own identity.
Writer-director Dillon Brown (Primal Darkness) aims to deliver everything fans crave from a slasher while boldly subverting expectations with a mid-film twist that redefines the story.
“This is an unapologetic love letter to the films that made me fall in love with horror,” Brown tells Bloody Disgusting. “But I didn’t just want to recreate that feeling; I wanted to challenge it. About halfway through, the film takes a turn that completely changes how you view not only this story, but the genre itself.”
Brown describes the vintage-inspired production as “far and away the bloodiest film I’ve ever made,” with practical effects helmed by Cody Ruch (The Mill, Pig Hill), an instructor at Tom Savini’s Special Make-Up Effects Program.
From Horror Dadz Productions, A Man in the Woods With an Axe is currently in production and targeting an early 2027 release.
