New to Blu – Week of 5/31/2016

New to Blu-ray

Each week here at Bloody Disgusting we like to highlight some of the new Blu-ray releases hitting shelves across the world. Please note that this isn’t every release for the week, just a few of the ones that jumped out at us.

Last week of May and we’ve got some fun releases. Vinegar Syndrome is delivering the goods with The Human Tornado and Psychic Killer and Blue Underground is in on the fun with Venom.  The real winner this week though? That’s Arrow’s Blood Bath!

US Releases

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Sony, Region A)

Synopsis:
Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England is faced with a new challenge: an army of undead zombies.

Blood Bath (Arrow, Region A)

Synopsis:
A crazed artist who believes himself to be the reincarnation of a murderous vampire kills young women, then boils their bodies in a vat.

Venom (Blue Underground, Region A)

Synopsis:
A big black mamba snake that has gotten loose in a townhouse slithers through a kidnapping plot in this film. Based on a novel by Alan Scholefield. Dr. Marion Stowe is a toxicologist who has brought the snake to London to study the properties of its deadly venom. It escapes and terrorizes the inhabitants of the townhouse, where an attempted kidnapping is in progress.

The Human Tornado (Vinegar Syndrome, Region A)

Synopsis:
Dolemite (Rudy Ray Moore) is back and badder than ever in THE HUMAN TORNADO! After being run out of town by a racist sheriff, Dolemite returns to LA only to discover that Queen Bee’s (Lady Reed) club has been taken over by the mafia. On top of that they have also kidnapped two of Queen Bee’s top girls! With the law hot on his tail, Dolemite rounds up the toughest Kung-Fu fighting badasses in Southern California to take on the mob, culminating in one of the craziest surprise endings in blaxploitation film history!

Gods of Egypt (Lionsgate, Region A)

Synopsis:
In order to bring his true love back to life, a clever mortal thief teams up with a powerful and vengeful god in order to stop the merciless god of darkness who hopes to destroy both this life and the Afterlife.

Psychic Killer (Vinegar Syndrome, Region A)

Synopsis:
A former mental patient uses astral projection to destroy the people he believes have wronged him.

The Terror (The Film Detective, Region A)

Synopsis:
Napoleonic cavalry soldier Lt. Andre Duvalier comes upon a mysterious woman named Helene. Although the lieutenant is immediately taken with Helene, she seems to be leading him into deadly traps. When Duvalier seeks refuge at a baron’s nearby castle, Helene unexpectedly appears there. The baron is convinced that Helene is the ghost of his long-departed wife Ilsa, but the lieutenant believes Helene is under a hypnotic spell.

 

UK Releases

Independence Day (Zavvi Steelbook, Region B)

Synopsis:
It is an ordinary summer day. But then, without warning, something very extraordinary happens. Enormous shadows fall across the land. Strange atmospheric phenomena, ominous and mesmerizing, surface around the globe. All eyes turn upward. The question of whether we’re alone in the universe has finally been answered. And, in a matter of minutes, the lives of every person across the globe are forever changed. With the fate of our planet at stake, the Fourth of July is about to take on an entirely new meaning. No longer will it be an American holiday. It will be known as the day the entire world fought back. Killer Dames (Arrow, Region B)

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave
Lord Alan Cunningham is haunted by the memory of his dead wife Evelyn. He channels the trauma of his spouse’s past affair by picking up red-headed prostitutes and subjecting them to vicious acts of torture in his decaying castle. He remarries in an attempt to recapture his fading sanity, but the arrival of his new wife spawns a series of sinister events. Bloodthirsty creatures strike at Sir Alan’s family, killing them off one by one. As the violence escalates, Evelyn’s tomb is discovered to be empty. The resurrected corpse descends upon the terrified Baron, beckoning him to join her in death…

Blood Bath (Arrow, Region B)

Synopsis:
A crazed artist who believes himself to be the reincarnation of a murderous vampire kills young women, then boils their bodies in a vat.

Deep Red (Arrow, Region B)

Synopsis:
A musician witnesses the murder of a famous psychic, and then teams up with a fiesty reporter to find the killer while evading attempts on their lives by the unseen killer bent on keeping a dark secret buried.

Goosebumps (Zavvi Steelbook, Region B)

Synopsis:
A young kid teams up with the niece of young adult horror author R.L. Stine after the writer’s imaginary demons are set free on the town of Greendale, Maryland.

Revenge! (Network, Region B)

Synopsis:
A family plots to take its revenge on the man who raped and murdered their daughter.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (Zavvi Steelbook, Region B)

Synopsis:
Former stuntman and bounty hunter of rogue demons Johnny Blaze has been living in self-imposed exile, believing that his powers are a curse. But when he is approached by a member of a monastic order who is looking for someone to protect a mother and her son, who are being pursued by the devil in the figure of a man named Roarke, the Ghost Rider takes the case.

The Hound of the Baskervilles (Studio Canal, Region B)

Synopsis:
It is the year 1889, it is night, and we see a man running across the moors: breathless, frightened. Behind him we hear the baying of a hound, a sound so fearful it chills the soul. The man falls. From the desolate rocky landscape another man peers; he is bearded and rough looking, perhaps a convict escaped from the nearby prison. At the great house that looms in the darkness, Baskerville Hall, a servant woman opens the door, lantern in hand, and finds her master, Sir Charles Baskerville dead. Considered by many as the best film in the series, Rathbone and Bruce establish themselves as the indisputable Holmes and Watson. Richard Green, Lionel Atwill and John Carradine make up the rest of the cast in this atmospheric thriller.
