From ‘Hush’ to Stephen King: Mike Flanagan Wants to Tackle “Gerald’s Game”

A few years ago, director Mike Flanagan (Ouija: Origin of Evil) was working with Jeff Howard on a script for a book-to-film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Gerald’s Game“. That project was put on hold when Flanagan began work on the well-received Hush, which was acquired by Netflix. Now that his schedule is open, Flanagan wants to return to adapting the King novel and make it his next project, according to Rue Morgue.

In the 1992 book, a woman accidentally kills her husband after being handcuffed to a bed, leaving her unable to free herself. As time passes and she realizes that rescue is an all but hopeless thought, she begins to slip into insanity, the voices in her head manifesting into visions.

I loved “Gerald’s Game” from the minute I put it down; I had gooseflesh all over my arms and my neck when I finished it, and I remember just exhaling and saying, ‘I want to make this into a movie—and it’s unfilmable!’ [laughs] and shaking my head, thinking, ‘If I could crack this, this could be one of the greatest King adaptations of them all,’” Flanagan tells the site. He also explains that the difficulty in making this book into a film isn’t necessarily adapting the source material but rather convincing financiers to invest in such an endeavor.

But it’s a real challenge for financiers and distributors, who say, ‘Yeah, we love your work, we love Stephen King, but this story, this particular story? We don’t know how it works,’ without reshaping it to fit a much more conventional structure, which I did not want to do.

However, once again it appears that Netflix might be here to rescue the adaptation, as Flanagan states, “Netflix, because of how well ‘Hush’ has done, said, ‘We’re really interested in this, and we’d like to do it the way you want to do it.’ And that eliminated the pressure of having to test-screen the movie and define the demographic that’s going to watch it—all of that stuff that typically comes into the conversation when you’re trying to figure out how to market a film for a wide theatrical release. It just cleared the table, so that I can make the movie I want to make. I’m hoping very much that we can get that movie up on its feet soon.

King’s work has been adapted numerous times, with films such as Carrie, Firestarter, Christine, The Shining, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, and several more getting the silver screen treatment. While some are fantastic, some of those adaptations leave a lot to be desired. We’ll have to wait and see how Flanagan treats “Gerald’s Game” and if it can be pulled off!
