Man Finds a ‘Missing Person Shrine’ in the Woods of Long Island
This Halloween season is already off to a terrifying start with people running around dressed up as clowns, scaring people and even taunting kids at elementary schools, but the story I have for you today takes the cake in my opinion.
James Rankin was hiking in the woods of Long Island’s Berkeley Jackson County Park when he stumbled upon what he’s described as a ‘shrine to missing persons.’ The shrine itself was made up of real missing person posters, some even featuring people still missing, stapled to trees close to a collapsed shelter around a filled in hole.
His two videos, sitting at over 200K views collectively, show him creeping around the campsite with a knife before exclaiming, “We’ve got to get out of here. We’ve got to get as far away as possible,” and running back to civilization.
A Reddit thread featuring one of the videos is rife with speculations from viewers. Some ideas include a new promotion for the recently released Blair Witch film, a filming location for an indie film and a copycat killer’s burial ground.
Other viewers speculated that the whole thing was a hoax, feeling skeptical thanks to his played-up acting. A man claiming to be a friend of Rankin’s had an explanation for his on-camera demeanor though.
“I’m friends with the guy in the video.” The Redditor says, “Here’s some facts to take into consideration. He is not faking anything nor did he have anything to do with setting this up. The video was weird because he likes to do woods/semi urban exploring and he videos for his friends. This video was made for his friends, no one else. We encouraged him to take it to the police. He put it on YouTube solely because he was afraid the police might keep his phone. One of his friends clearly posted it here. He is very proud of his gear, knives, etc, which is why he mentioned it. I know where this was and while it may have traffic alongside, it was still a freaky place to find in the woods. He didn’t do any of this for you guys. Yes, the police checked it out and said the person who owns the property did it for a Halloween party. Which is insane, but there you go. That’s the truth. He went straight to local police with his findings, and after visiting the property owner, the police found that the posters were decorations for an upcoming Halloween party.”
Rankin isn’t buying the Halloween party excuse. In a followup Facebook post he says:
“What I wanna know is, if these were ‘Halloween party’ decorations, why have they been hanging there for weeks or months?
Because it was plainly obvious that the stuff had been there for quite a while, and not set up recently. That’s clearly the case as seen in the videos. Seems to me they’re just using the time of year as an excuse (just my opinion).”
I think it’s a little suspicious that the shelter had been out in the woods long enough to fall over, but the posters look pretty fresh to me. Either way, I’d be pretty creeped out if I found something like that in the woods.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).
Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.
While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.
The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.
Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.
We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
