Are you wearing the mask or is it wearing you?
First published in September of 1993, R.L. Stine’s The Haunted Mask is undoubtedly the most popular Goosebumps book of them all. The story of a young girl who puts on a scary mask on Halloween night and finds herself unable to take it off, the book has become an iconic Halloween tale for all ages, and it spawned a handful of follow-ups.
In addition to Carly Beth being brought to the screen in the “Goosebumps” television series, the evil mask’s mythology was explored in book sequels The Haunted Mask 2, Goosebumps HorrorLand: The Scream of the Haunted Mask, and most recently, Goosebumps Wanted: The Haunted Mask. But there was another tale you never got to read.
Planned for release in 2001, the spinoff series Goosebumps Gold was to tell sequel stories to the most popular Goosebumps books, but the whole line fell through when Stine’s contract with Scholastic came to an end. From what Stine has said, the books were never actually written, but some were given titles and even coven art.
The only proof we have that Goosebumps Gold: The Haunted Mask Lives! was even going to be a thing is series artist Tim Jacobus‘ art for the planned book, which he posted over on his official website. Unfortunately, there’s no way to know what the storyline would’ve been, but the art is nevertheless a Halloween treat we wanted to share.
