They just don’t make ’em like Poland makes ’em.
Many years ago I stumbled upon an art book at my local library that collected together movie posters from different countries. It was thanks to this book that I learned that Polish posters are the most wonderfully bonkers pieces of art ever created. Surreal and so boldly outside-the-box that it was often hard to tell what movie was even being depicted, those hand-painted posters – for films like Alien, Gremlins, and Rosemary’s Baby – blew my mind with how different they were from their American counterparts, and they opened my eyes to how awesome movie art can be.
Now, a German artist is recreating that Polish style. Go figure!
Hailing from Augsburg, Germany, Sebastian Onufszak just completed a unique poster series that he calls “Heads of Psychopaths,” and the idea was to turn classic films centered on iconic madmen into pieces of art that evoke the style and feeling of that Polish movie poster art. On the horror front, Halloween, Eraserhead, The Tenant, and The Shining got the treatment.
Said the artist:
Inspired by Polish film posters this is a series of illustrations showing the psychopathic characters from several iconic movies between 1976 and 1980.
We’d love to see more where these came from, Sebastian!
