White meat… dark meat… all will be carved.
For horror fans, Thanksgiving is a day not just to eat and drink way too much, but also to revisit the very best Thanksgiving horror film ever made. No, I’m not talking about Home Sweet Home, Thankskilling, or even Blood Rage. I’m talking about Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving, which of course isn’t really a full horror film at all. At least not yet…
When Planet Terror and Death Proof were collectively released into theaters back in 2007 as Grindhouse, the films were separated by a series of faux trailers. The most notable was Roth’s Thanksgiving, which teased the ultimate Thanksgiving slasher flick. Of course, it wasn’t actually meant to preview a real upcoming film, but in the years since, fans have been begging for it.
And Roth has been listening.
It’s been nine years since Grindhouse landed in theaters, and though Roth doesn’t seem to be any closer to actually turning Thanksgiving into a real feature, he damn sure hasn’t stopped talking about it. Roth is asked about the film at least a couple times each year, and the most recent update he gave on the status of the project was back in June of this year.
Roth took part in a Reddit AMA session on June 2nd, and as he probably expected, he was asked about Thanksgiving. At that time, Roth indicated that the film was still in the works.
Said Roth:
Have a draft not totally happy with. I want to put some more work into it so the film lives up to the trailer. We have the story and mythology cracked so now it’s about getting the kills right.
Over the years, Roth’s passion for the project has never seemed to wane, and last we heard, he planned on making it a serious slasher film that would feel like it truly was ripped straight out of the ’80s. Of course, the wacky faux trailer was mostly played for laughs, but it’s likely that if the movie ever does actually come to fruition, it’ll be more straight-faced than over-the-top comedic.
As for whether or not it will actually happen, well, your guess is as good as ours.
Meantime, revisit the 2007 trailer below!
In Thanksgiving:
In the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, the fourth Thursday in November is the most celebrated day of the year. But an uninvited guest has arrived, and this year, there will be no leftovers.
