Fans Went On a Road Trip to Horror Movie Filming Locations and Made This Video

Published

on

In October 2016, two friends from Quebec City made a road trip in North America to see the locations of their favorite horror films. The following winter, this video was found on YouTube.

One of the coolest things you can do as a horror fan is visit some of the filming locations seen in the movies you love. Traveling to those locations makes you feel like you’re inside of those fictional worlds; to this day, a trip several years ago to the real-life sets of 1988’s Lady in White is one of my favorite memories. I’ve always wanted to go on a cross-country road trip and visit other locations from films like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street along the way, but alas, such adventures require time and money that are both pretty hard to come by.

So let’s live vicariously through two fans who actually did it!

The Road Trip Project is a 5-minute video documenting the coolest road trip ever: the hardcore horror fans traveled to the filming locations of 15 different horror movies, and they took images of those locations as they appear today. Locales from films such as Jaws, The Blair Witch Project, The Exorcist, Dawn of the Dead, and It Follows were part of the trip, and though it would of course be way cooler to see them all for yourself, we think you’ll dig this virtual road trip adventure.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
