Richard Kelly Plotting Return to ‘Donnie Darko’ Universe With Ambitious Follow-Up

Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

As the fanbase for 2001 cult classic Donnie Darko continues to grow, Arrow Video just released a brand spankin’ new Blu-ray set over in the UK. The 2-disc release boasts a 4K restoration of the Richard Kelly-directed film (both the Theatrical Cut and the Director’s Cut), and it’s loaded with special features that dig deep into the heady madness of the film’s sci-fi universe.

You may remember that the sequel S. Darko was released back in 2009, centered on Donnie’s sister Sam, but the much-maligned follow-up was made without the involvement of Richard Kelly; as a result, most fans of Donnie Darko prefer to pretend it doesn’t exist. But what about a true sequel? Speaking with HMV, Kelly just teased he’d love to someday return to that world.

While promoting the Arrow Video Blu-ray, Kelly told the site:

I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.

In the meantime, check out the Donnie Darko 4K re-release trailer below.

Sleepy Hollow movie

Paramount is heading to Sleepy Hollow with a brand new feature film take on the classic Headless Horseman tale, with Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) announced to direct the movie back in 2022. But is that project still happening, now two years later?

The Hollywood Reporter lets us know this afternoon that Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look deal with Lindsey Anderson Beer, and one of the projects on the upcoming slate is the aforementioned Sleepy Hollow movie that was originally announced two years ago.

THR details, “Additional projects on the development slate include… Sleepy Hollow with Anderson Beer attached to write, direct, and produce alongside Todd Garner of Broken Road.”

You can learn more about the slate over on The Hollywood Reporter. It also includes a supernatural thriller titled Here Comes the Dark from the writers of Don’t Worry Darling.

The origin of all things Sleepy Hollow is of course Washington Irving’s story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which was first published in 1819. Tim Burton adapted the tale for the big screen in 1999, that film starring Johnny Depp as main character Ichabod Crane.

More recently, the FOX series “Sleepy Hollow” was also based on Washington Irving’s tale of Crane and the Headless Horseman. The series lasted four seasons, cancelled in 2017.
