Sean Astin Playing New Boyfriend of Major Character in “Stranger Things” Season 2

The second season will pick up a year after the first one.

It was announced back in November that Sean Astin had joined the cast of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” for its upcoming second season, which just seems like perfect casting to us. After all, the first season reminded us of The Goonies, so having Astin on board for the second feels only right. But who will he be playing on the show? We’ve got the first character details for ya.

As reported by Hollywood Life, David Harbour and other “Stranger Things” stars were aboard the Fan2Sea Comic Con cruise over the weekend, and Harbour spilled the beans about Astin’s character. As it turns out, Astin will be playing the boyfriend of Winona Ryder’s Joyce Byers.

Said Harbour, who plays Chief Hopper:

We have Sean Astin… he’s Winona’s new boyfriend — much to the chagrin of the Chief of Police.

Astin’s character is a former classmate of Hopper and Joyce.

Harbour also teased the season, noting that Barb will be acknowledged:

It’s a year later in the story, so there are several things that happened last year — like Will has come back — there are certain people in the town that know what happened, and then certain people that don’t know what happened. So there’s a lot of fall out with who knows what.

The question and the feelings that Nancy has that no one ever cares about her friend Barb, are very much present in the beginning of the season.

Also confirmed to appear in the second season are Paul Reiser, Brett Gelman, Linnea Berthelsen, Dacre Montgomery, Rob Morgan, and Sadie Sink. They will be joining the returning Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, and Charlie Heaton.
