[Toy Fair ’17] ‘The Mummy’ and ‘The Dark Tower’ Join Funko’s POP! Vinyl Line
Two of the most hotly-anticipated movies of 2017 head to the toy shelf.
We’re looking ahead to a huge summer this year, and two of the biggest movies headed our way in the warmer months are a brand spankin’ new reboot of The Mummy in June and the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower in July. While we wait for both films, let’s check out a sneak peek of their upcoming POP! vinyl toys, shall we?
Just shown off at Toy Fair, Idris Elba’s Roland “The Gunslinger” Deschain and Matthew McConaughey’s villainous Randal “The Man in Black” Flagg get the POP! vinyl treatment in representation of The Dark Tower. Deschain is armed with two pistols (there’s a reason they call him “The Gunslinger”), while “The Man in Black” holds one of the 13 orbs of Maerlyn’s Rainbow
As for The Mummy, that film’s POP! vinyl wave includes Tom Cruise’s Nick Morton and Sofia Boutella’s title character as both the princess Ahmenet and, well, the mummy herself.
Check out concept art for The Mummy toys below.
On a related note, Ripley is joining Funko’s Rock Candy line…

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).
Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.
While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.
The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.
Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.
We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
