This past Friday my dinner got very cold as I rushed up breaking news that J.J. Abrams would be producing a new Hulu series, “Castle Rock”, which is part of Stephen King’s fictional Maine topography that provides the setting for a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories.
It’s now official, with Hulu confirming to Bloody Disgusting that 10 episodes are on the way. There’s no actual plot details, although what is being shared confirms what we already knew:
A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, ‘Castle Rock’ combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.
‘Castle Rock’ is an original suspense/thriller — a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.
Castle Rock first appeared in King’s 1979 novel “The Dead Zone”, and has reappeared as late as his 2013 novel “Doctor Sleep” and 2014 novel “Revival”. The name is taken from the fictional mountain fort of the same name in William Golding’s 1954 novel “Lord of the Flies”.
“Cujo”, “The Dark Half” and “Needful Things” were set in Castle Rock, while “Creepshow”, “The Stand”, “Sleepwalkers”, “Gerald’s Game” and even “It” reference the town.
Manhattan creator Sam Shaw & Dustin Thomason developed the project for television and serve as writers. They executive produce along with Abrams, Ben Stephenson and Liz Glotzer.
