Netflix previewed a trio of new worldwide projects this morning, one being the German thriller “Dark”, which is described as a “family drama with a supernatural twist.”
In the series, a missing child sets four families on a frantic hunt for answers. Their search for a culprit unearths a small town’s sins and secrets.
While you’re going to have to tough through subtitles, “Dark” looks to share the same qualities of “Stranger Things”, only it’s deadpan serious. Here, children go missing in what appear to be supernatural occurrences; a brief voice over at the end teases that it has something to do with “time”. It’s dark, moody, with some intense visuals. I’m very excited about this one…
“Dark” comes from acclaimed Swiss director Baran Bo Odar (Sleepless, Who Am I?) and the producers of Oscar winner The Lives of Others.
“We had absolute creative freedom,” said Baran Bo Odar. “We could cast whoever we wanted, the actors who fit best for the role. Netflix gave us a budget and a couple of notes and let us do it.”
“Dark” arrives on Netflix this winter.
