Horror Novel ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism’ Gets a Crazy Cool VHS-Style Reissue

Be kind and rewind this book.

Author Grady Hendrix released his second novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism last year, which he describes as “Beaches meets The Exorcist.” Set in the late ’80s during the so-called Satanic Panic, it’s a touching story of high school friendship and, well, demonic possession.

If you haven’t yet picked it up, you may be glad you held out, because the paperback reissue has some of the coolest art we’ve ever seen. Artist Hugh Fleming essentially imagined what the novel would look like had it been turned into a horror movie and released onto VHS in the 1980s, and he added all the period-authentic bells and whistles. Yes, even the “please rewind” sticker.

In the novel…

The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act…different. She’s moody. She’s irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she’s nearby. Abby’s investigation leads her to some startling discoveries—and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

Look for the reissue on July 11th.
