J.J. Abrams-Produced ‘Overlord’ May Be a ‘Cloverfield’ Movie
We can at least confirm that it’s not a Venom origin story.
Bad Robot’s “Clover-verse” is easily the most compelling shared universe at the moment, thus far including the 2008 found footage monster movie Cloverfield and last year’s loosely connected follow-up, 10 Cloverfield Lane. Set for release this coming October 27th is an as-yet untitled third film in the monstrous universe, which most are assuming is Julius Onah’s God Particle.
And then there’s the Abrams-produced Overlord, which was just announced this year. Being directed by Julius Avery and presumably set for release in 2018, the World War II-set film just began casting up, with both Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell signing on for active duty.
In the film…
On the eve of D-Day, a group of American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success, but as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.
Naturally, this being another Bad Robot/Paramount collaboration with a shrouded-in-secrecy plot, many have begun speculating that Overlord is going to turn out to be the 4th film in the “Clover-verse.” Overlord, interestingly enough, is set in 1944, just one year before fictional company Tagruato was founded. The Japanese mining company, as hardcore fans know, has ties to everything going on in the universe (one of their subsidiaries is Bold Futura, where Howard Stambler worked), so it’s entirely possible that Overlord could be a prequel/origin story of sorts.
Of course, this is nothing but speculation at the moment. But if there’s one thing we know about J.J. Abrams… well, let’s just say it wouldn’t surprise us if Overlord is “Cloverfield 4.”
We’ll do some more digging…

‘Hold the Fort’ Trailer Pits New Homeowners Against an Onslaught of Monsters
Sunrise Films has announced the official North American release of William Bagley‘s horror comedy Hold the Fort, and it’s accompanied by an energetic new trailer.
Hold the Fort debuts on digital platforms on June 23.
In the film, “Lucas and Jenny think their life is finally coming together when the couple become homeowners. Little do they know that their new house comes with a big catch. Lucas and Jenny soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when they become trapped in a battle between their Homeowners Association and an onslaught of monsters from hell. The horror-comedy takes the timely concern of home-ownership and wraps this up in an entertaining action-packed thrill ride.“
Watch the new trailer below, which introduces one wild HOA gathering during an equinox. Things get bloody fast.
Chris Mayers (Adult Swim Yule Log), Haley Leary (“The Walking Dead”), Levi Burdick, and Julian Smith star.
William Bagley writes and directs, in addition to producing with Smith, Matt Dodd, Luke Williams, and Tim Reis (Adult Swim Yule Log).
Ahead of the release, Bagley said, “My goal with this film was to make a hilarious, fast-paced thrill ride while also telling a great story with heart. Hopefully, through all the blood, laughs, fights, and gags, you leave the film feeling inspired to tackle whatever life throws at you.“
Hold the Fort premiered at Fantasia last summer before going on to play FrightFest London, Toronto After Dark, and Beyond Fest.
I wrote in my review, “It’s an infectiously charming assemblage of jokes and monster vignettes bound together by a barebones plot with not much on its mind beyond delivering an entertaining time.”
