It was announced last week that Sony Pictures had won a bidding war to nab the rights to Emil Ferris’ graphic novel My Favorite Thing is Monsters, and now Deadline is reporting tonight that Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Spectre) is in early talks to develop and direct the feature film. The graphic novel was just published this past February.
My Favorite Thing is Monsters takes the form of a fictional graphic diary. The story centers on a 10-year-old girl who’s trying to solve a murder.
Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen’s investigation takes us back to Anka’s life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge.
If the deal goes through, Mendes will develop through Neal Street and produce with Amasia Entertainment’s Bradley Gallo and Michael Helfant. Palak Patel is overseeing for Columbia.
Meanwhile, My Favorite Thing is Monsters Vol. 2 comes out October 10th.
