Aside from rare exceptions, the Blacksploitation sub-genre was mostly an export of the 1970s. Launched at the start of the decade, the term was coined by NAACP head Junius Griffin to denote exploitation films that primarily featured black casts, and the sub-genre crossed over into the horror world with 1972’s Blacula. Just one year later, Blackenstein arrived on the scene.

Eddie is a Vietnam veteran who loses his arms and legs when he steps on a land mine, but a brilliant surgeon is able to attach new limbs. Unfortunately, an insanely jealous assistant (who has fallen in love with Eddie’s fiance) switches Eddie’s DNA injections, transforming him into a gigantic killer.
The low-budget Frankenstein parody is coming to Blu-ray for the first time courtesy of Severin Films, Xenon Pictures and Vinegar Syndrome. The disc will be arriving on May 30th, and it boasts “an immaculate transfer of the rarely seen original theatrical cut AND a new assembly of the home video release version, Frankensteined together from the best existing elements!”
