New to Blu-ray

Each week here at Bloody Disgusting we like to highlight some of the new Blu-ray releases hitting shelves across the world. Please note that this isn’t every release for the week, just a few of the ones that jumped out at us.

Awesome week of releases this week with new stuff from Scream Factory, Arrow and Kino Lorber. The big release this week that people have been looking forward to is the brand-new Donnie Darko from Arrow and rightfully so, it’s a loaded release. But the winner this week, at least as far as I’m concerned, is Tales from the Hood, a fantastic anthology that holds up incredibly well.

US Releases

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (Arrow, Region A)

Synopsis:
Lord Alan Cunningham is haunted by the memory of his dead wife Evelyn. He channels the trauma of his spouse’s past affair by picking up red-headed prostitutes and subjecting them to vicious acts of torture in his decaying castle. He remarries in an attempt to recapture his fading sanity, but the arrival of his new wife spawns a series of sinister events. Bloodthirsty creatures strike at Sir Alan’s family, killing them off one by one. As the violence escalates, Evelyn’s tomb is discovered to be empty. The resurrected corpse descends upon the terrified Baron, beckoning him to join her in death…

Ex-soldier Tom Jeffords saves the life of an Apache boy and starts to wonder if Indians are human, after all; soon, he determines to use this chance to make himself an ambassador. Against all odds, his solitary mission into Cochise’s stronghold opens a dialogue. Opportunely, the president sends General Howard with orders to conclude peace. But even with Jeffords’ luck, the deep grievance and hatred on both sides make tragic failure all too likely…

Donnie Darko (Arrow, Region A)

Synopsis:
Some may think that Donnie Darko is a typical maladjusted teenager. Actually, Donnie is a borderline delusional intelligent, depressive, self-destructive, narcoleptic, gun-toting, sex- crazed, teenaged arsonist, beset by visions of a monstrous rabbit which is trying to keep him under its sinister influence. Prompted by this apparition, Donnie commits antisocial acts while he is undergoing psychotherapy, surviving the vagaries of high-school life and romance, and fortuitously escaping a bizarre death from a falling jet engine. Donnie battles his demons, literally and figuratively, in a series of intertwining story lines that play with time travel, fundamentalist gurus, fate, predestination and the machinations of the universe.

Split (Universal, Region A)

Synopsis:
Kevin, a man with 23 different personalities, is compelled to abduct three teenage girls. As they are held captive, a final personality—”The Beast”—begins to emerge.

Tales from the Hood (Scream Factory, Region A)

GOOD MANNERS blu-ray

One of contemporary horror’s best werewolf movies is 2017’s Good Manners, and it’s finally set to receive a proper physical media release.

Icarus Films is partnering with OCN Distribution to unleash a new Blu-ray that’s now available to preorder via Vinegar Syndrome. and with a limited edition slipcover.

Set in São Paulo, the film follows Clara, a lonely nurse from the outskirts of the city who is hired by mysterious and wealthy Ana to be the nanny of her soon to be born child. Against all odds, the two women develop a strong bond. But a fateful night marked by a full moon changes their plans.

Good Manners is the second collaboration between filmmakers Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, who write and direct. Zama’s Rui Poças‘ cinematography captures this unique werewolf tale described as “Disney meets Jacques Tourneur.”

Our own Trace Thurman wrote in his review, “With Good Manners, Rojas and Dutro have made one of the best werewolf movies ever made. That they are able juggle commentaries on racism and classism while still managing to tell two deeply affecting love stories is remarkable.”

BONUS FEATURES:

  • Commentary from film critics Shelagh Rowan-Legg and Carolyn Mauricette
  • 12-page booklet with an essay by film critic Nicolas Pedrero-Setzer
  • Making-of short film: The Making of a Werewolf (2 mins)
