This news may give you a little sense of deja vu, as we heard similar news back in June of last year, but Deadline is reporting today that Amazon Studios has given an eight-episode straight-to-series order to “Carnival Row,“ a supernatural drama based on Pacific Rim writer Travis Beacham’s decade-old feature spec script A Killing on Carnival Row. Guillermo del Toro was attached to the project when Amazon originally picked up a pilot episode of the series last year, but his busy schedule prevented him from staying on board as executive producer.
The timely “Carnival Row” is a fantasy-noir set in a neo-Victorian city. Mythical creatures fleeing their war-torn homeland have gathered in the city, and tensions are simmering between citizens and the growing immigrant population. The series follows the investigation of a string of unsolved murders that are eating away at whatever uneasy peace still exists.
The series will begin filming in fall 2018 for 2019 premiere.
Rene Echevarria (Star Trek) is writer, exec producer and showrunner, Paul McGuigan (Victor Frankenstein) is set to direct and executive produce, and Beacham will exec produce.
