We learned back in April that Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush) is writing, directing and executive producing “The Haunting of Hill House” for Netflix, a 10-episode series that will serve as a modern re-imagining of Shirley Jackson’s classic 1959 novel – previously adapted in both 1963 and 1999 as feature films titled The Haunting.
THR is reporting the first casting news today, revealing that “Game of Thrones” star Michiel Huisman (below) has come aboard. The story centers on four people living in an 80-year-old mansion, and Huisman has been cast to play Steven Crane, the oldest Crane sibling and a published writer of supernatural books — including a memoir about his family’s time living at Hill House.
The book tells the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a “haunting”; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House.
At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.
Trevor Macy produces alongside Flanagan. Amblin TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank will also exec produce.
