Way back in 2013, Michael Dougherty got us all excited with the announcement that Sam would be returning for Trick ‘r Treat 2, the long-awaited sequel to his 2007 (but not widely released until 2009) anthology that has gone on to become an iconic Halloween horror movie. Of course, the project just wasn’t meant to be at that time.
In the years since the announcement, Dougherty went on to tackle Christmas horror with Krampus, and he just wrapped filming on sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters. So then, what’s the deal with Trick ‘r Treat 2? Is it off the table completely, or does Dougherty still intend on bringing Sam back for more Halloween hijinks?
Speaking with Mick Garris on Post Mortem, Dougherty just provided a timely update.
“My hope is that once Godzilla has been put to rest that I can dive back into [Trick ‘r Treat 2],” he told Garris. “I would love to finish writing it in post-production [of Godzilla] and then I’d love to make it my next project.“
“But we’ll see,” Dougherty added.
