‘Heretic’ successor ‘Amid Evil’ Revealed!

Published

on

Amidst the Doom craze in the early 90s, where everyone and their mom was coming out with a Doom clone, there were a few games that managed to stand out. One of those being 1994’s Heretic. Using a modified version of the Doom engine, the game melded FPS gameplay with RPG elements, and included gory bits that even Doom missed. After Heretic came Hexen a year later. Both games would receive their respective sequels, but that third game was elusive for both.

Now after years of waiting, indie studio Indefatigable (made up of the producers of DUSK and the creators of Return of the Triad remake) has revealed via trailer the spiritual successor to Heretic and Hexen in Amid Evil. Powered by the Unreal Engine 4, and featuring the magical weaponry and dark fantasy environments of its inspirations, Amid Evil will also feature sprawling non-linear levels, brutal enemy AI, and even cheat codes for that special throwback touch.

Right now, the game is on Steam with a release date of “SOON”. Until then, here’s that trailer.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
