Never After Dark is conjuring major buzz ahead of Halloween season. Stephen King calls Dave Boyle’s Japanese horror movie “amazing and haunting,” while Scott Derrickson says it’s “intelligent, unpredictable, and bone chilling.” Sadly, the film doesn’t haunt theaters until September 25th, but we’ve got the early ticket!

In the film, “A wandering medium, Airi (Moeka Hoshi, “Shogun”), spends her life guiding restless spirits out of the world of the living accompanied by her constant companion: her dead sister Miku (Kurumi Inagaki). Summoned to exorcise a spirit from an isolated country house by the new owner, Teiko (Tae Kimura), she comes face to face with a grotesque apparition with powers that defy Airi’s experience.
“Faced with skepticism from Teiko’s son, Gunji (Kento Kako), she digs deeper into the house’s past until a secret comes to light — and Airi finds herself hunted by a far more unpredictable force. For the first time, her greatest adversary is not the supernatural, but the living.”
Magnolia Pictures previews, “Director Dave Boyle spins a uniquely terrifying and hauntingly atmospheric ghost story.”
Kento Kaku (“House of Ninjas”), Kurumi Inagaki (“House of Ninjas”), Mutsuo Yoshioka (Chime), Bokuzo Masana (“Tokyo Vice”), and Tae Kimura (“All Around Us”) also star.
Meagan Navarro similarly praised the film in her review out of SXSW this past March, writing, “The filmmaker also smartly contrasts his ghoulish appearance with the quiet elegance of Teiko’s hotel, nestled in a bucolic countryside with few neighbors. It’s that juxtaposition of a cool city girl at home with ghosts battling tangible enemies in a safe rural neighborhood, and Boyle’s blending of subgenres, that makes Never After Dark a fresh but cozy hug of a horror movie.”
