A new take on Stephen King‘s Carrie will be arriving on Prime Video in just a few weeks, courtesy of King aficionado Mike Flanagan. The filmmaker has pretty big shoes to fill, given the legacy of Brian de Palma‘s original movie starring Sissy Spacek. Potentially alleviating some of that pressure, though, is the fact that we’ve also gotten a sequel to that original movie, along with two feature-length reboots, all of which fell short of the accomplishments of both the original movie and the source material.
One of the biggest distinctions of this new adaptation is the events of the novel will be spread out over eight episodes, with Prime Video today releasing the titles of each chapter.
Even though Mike Flanagan is known for exploring emotionally heavy topics and themes, the titles highlight his playfulness, especially considering the series premiere is titled “First Period,” with Carrie’s first period famously unlocking her telekinetic abilities.

Given that the series premiere is obviously a nod to Carrie’s (Summer H. Howell) transition into adulthood, the rest of the titles have us speculating about significant components of the narrative. “Foreign Language” could be a nod to Carrie being unfamiliar with what’s happening to her, with “Physical Education” teasing her embracing her abilities while “Home Economics” might imply Carrie’s confrontation with her mother, played by Samantha Sloyan. We can only imagine Carrie’s physics-defying abilities that could be explored in “AP Physics.”
Prime Video describes the new series, “Misfit high‑schooler Carrie White (Howell) has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Sloyan). After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.”
Also starring in Carrie are Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard.
Even if we’ve seen versions of Carrie before, Mike Flanagan recently explained to Entertainment Weekly what will set his take on the material apart from his predecessors.
“The story of Carrie alone has been told now several times,” the filmmaker shared with the outlet. “The thing that’s never been delved into is Carrie’s a part of this larger community of women and she never gets to know that. We have a book that fits perfectly into a 90-minute format. We’re talking about a series. Expansion’s essential. So if that’s the mission, how can we earn it? And that was the crux of it. Let’s understand that this is the story about gifted women. Let’s understand that this is a story about young women, in particular, learning their place in the world and coming into their power — and all the pitfalls that come with that.”
The new Carrie series premieres on Prime Video on October 7.
