Washington Irving‘s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of the most iconic stories in all of American literature, as it has been brought to life and adapted into a variety of mediums since its publishing in 1820. One of the most significant adaptations came in Disney’s 1949 The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad animated special, with another notable adaptation being Tim Burton‘s 1999 Sleepy Hollow. A new take on the material is on the way, which will star Sydney Sweeney, and it has just found its Brom Bones.
The new adaptation, Hollow, is based on the upcoming novel from Lindsey Anderson Beer, who is also set to direct. In addition to starring Sweeney as Katrina Van Tassel, Deadline confirms that Belmont Cameli, seen on the far right in the photo at the top of the page from Until Dawn, will play Bones.
Rather than being an outright adaptation of the original story, Hollow will put a spin on the story and will center on Van Tassel. The outlet describes the new story, “Reframing one of literature’s most iconic heroines, the novel positions Van Tassel not as a romantic prize but as the central figure in a dangerous mystery and seductive supernatural love triangle. The story blends gothic atmosphere, psychological intrigue, and erotic thriller elements into a contemporary, high-concept reinvention of the classic tale.”
Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, which starred Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane, Christina Ricci as Katrina, and Casper Van Dien as Bones, similarly introduced new narrative components to expand the story into a feature-length experience. While the source material focuses on Ichabod coming into the village of Sleepy Hollow as a schoolteacher, only to be run out of the community by Bones under the legend of the Headless Horseman, Burton’s film instead makes Ichabod an investigator. Heightening the deadly nature of the premise is the rising body count in the village, which leads to the reveal of the Headless Horseman acting as a supernatural hitman getting revenge on the town’s elders.
One of the more recent adaptations of the story also served as an unexpected reimagining of the core concept, as the Sleepy Hollow TV series saw Ichabod (Tom Mison) being fatally injured in 1781 and awakening in modern-day Sleepy Hollow. From there, Ichabod investigates a variety of bizarre occurrences in the town.
More recently, Cameli was seen in Prime Video’s Off Campus. Beer previously directed the Stephen King prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.
The novel Hollow is set to be released in fall of 2027. The movie adaptation doesn’t yet have a release date.
